Searching for the perfect formula…. by Susie

I love formulas.  I love to see how one can actually write down, in mathematical form, an equation that describes the physical world around us.  Maxwell’s equations for electro-magnetism have always been a favorite of mine.  Perhaps you remember seeing physics “geeks” on your college campus sporting T-shirts with something like this printed on it.

LOVE it!!  I recently stumbled upon a site that posed the following question:  “What is the most beautiful equation?”  I was not surprised to see Maxwell’s equations listed among them !! If you think math and physics is fun, then check out these answers out!  Click here : Beautiful Equations
{This one is just plain fun :  P_{0} e^{tr} = y    – Malthus Equation for Exponential Growth}
Well, if you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m a physicist and physicists LOVE formulas!  So if I had it my way, there would be a formula, or even a set of beautiful equations that would guide me in my parenting and the discipling up of my children. Proofs if you will. Fool proof proofs!  I confess that while I know there is no such thing, I still find myself on the hunt. Searching for that perfect resource that summarizes ALL the Biblical wisdom in it and whittles it down into one amazing formula that I can follow and ensure my children will grow up to be passionate followers of Jesus. {Hmmm…kinda reminds me of Einstein’s Grand Unified Theory….but I digress 🙂 }

Recently, while my husband and I walked through the shadows of a very challenging parenting phase, I found myself mentally exhausted from trying to get my hands on and reading every book I could find on the particular subject we were struggling with.  My heart was breaking, I was at a loss as a mother on how to minster to my child,  I was worn out with worry and despair and I needed guidance. I wanted experts. I wanted answers. I wanted formulas.   Honestly, I found the over-abundance of experts “out-there” to be overwhelming.  There was a deluge of opinions, advice, and even formulas!  I would hazard a guess that at some point in your parenting “career” you have sought out wisdom in training up your child from a variety of resources – as you should!  Resources are great – that’s why Kellye started this blog. A place to recommend resources for parents be encouraged to “raise up children with deep roots in the word of God and in the person of Jesus Christ”!  And yes, I found some great resources that I would absolutely recommend to someone else struggling though the same issue, but where I felt most equipped and the most encouraged was when God spoke very clearly and compassionately to me during my small group’s journey through the Bible study, Experiencing God.  We were looking at the life of Moses.  He cried out to God asking for him to show him how to teach and lead the Isrealites now that they had been delivered out of Egypt.
Exodus 33:
12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ 13 If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”
As I read these verses I felt my heart shout out to God,  “You have told me to ‘lead these children’ but you haven’t told me how to do it.  Teach me your ways!!! What books do I read? Who do I talk to? What do I do? Tell me!  Teach me! Show me now!!!”
Do you know what God’s response was to Moses? (and to my screaming heart?)
The Lord replied, “My presence will go with you and you will find rest.” vs 14.

The next week, a friend led us through a Bible study on James 1.  This familiar passage of scripture was like a salve to my aching heart;
“2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
 Wow did I ever ( and still do) feel like I lacked wisdom and I was so ready for it to be given generously and without fault.  I love that “tidbit” added in at the end. Our heavenly Father doesn’t look upon us with disdain and disgust when we plead for wisdom.  No…He gives it generously and without finding fault.  Oh…and if I could remember the promise from the previous week, He goes with us and gives us rest while he’s at it 🙂

So yes, take advantage of the gift of the many resources out there before you. But rely first and foremost on the presence of the Almighty God with you.  We pray you will be inspired and encouraged, as we have, through the resources we highlight here.  But whatever you do, don’t place your trust in chariots and men.  Trust in the Name of the Lord.  Seek the wisdom that comes from above, and He will grant it generously and without fault.  His presence will go with you and He will give you rest.
I may have just found the perfect formula afterall….

    This is something I needed to hear/read today. Thank you Susan!!
    “2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

  2. I have found myself doing the same over the years and inevitably find myself fed up and crying out and the feet of God. That’s where he wants me. Once I get to that place and let go, he takes over and gives me everything I need. He grows my faith and makes sure I recognize that they are not my children. They are his.
